In an attempt to clean up the language a little, so we don't confuse the heck out of either ourselves or foreigners trying to learn the muddled chaos that is English, I would say it's time to update our supply of adages a little bit. Let's face it, not many people go around receiving horses as gifts anymore, or picking up eggs in the morning, regardless of how many baskets are used, or that sort of thing. Instead, here are a few modernized versions:
1) Don't look a gift car under the hood:
2) Don't put all your files on one drive:
and, one that is highly relevant in these days,
3) A job offer in the inbox is worth 50 unresponsive interviews:
Why fifty? Because I swear that's about the ratio these days. Fifty interviews, one call-back. Sad times, but there it is. Feel free to use the new versions in day-to-day speech, you might just be the hottest thing since text-to-speech cell phones (that one's free). Cheers!
