One of those days

Did you ever have one of those days that just seemed to utterly lack energy? It's not that you don't get things done, or that you're not interested in life, but just... it's too much work. Today was one of those, and coming on the heels of a rough week, I didn't really get much of anything done. Rather than fall into a funk about it though, I decided it was time to go find my energy, no matter where it went.

First step on recovering energy: music. No matter what your favorite kind of music is, listening to something with a decently paced beat and with a positive message will always improve your mood. If it's got the right type of rhythm to dance to, so much the better. Boogie while you vacuum, headbang while folding laundry, or jive while dusting- whatever you end up doing will not only get you moving (a proven method to being in a better mood), but will also accomplish one of those annoying chores that looked boring. Now it's out of the way, and life is looking better.

Second step: make cookies! Despite being on a kick to eat more healthfully, the fact remains that I was out of cookies for lunches. I also have been slacking on sending cookies to two of my friends that I owe care packages to, so I made a double batch of chocolate chip cookies. Not the most healthy thing in the world (coming in at 106 calories per cookie, according to the website I use to track caloric intake), but there is much to be said for comfort food, and as long as you make healthy choices elsewhere, one indulgence isn't going to break the bank. Or the scale.

Third step: reach out. When you're a social butterfly or a lone wolf, human interaction really is a necessity in life. In today's interconnected, always-on world, it's sometimes easy to lose track of what is actually happening to the people you care about. Stop sending 160-character text, blurbs, tweets, or updates, and just sit down to a real conversation, in whatever format you choose. Devote time to re-establishing a connection with someone, until you both feel you're really on par with each other. It makes a world of difference, and you had a break from the hectic pace of modern technology.

Naturally, there are a multitude of steps towards recovering your energy and your day; these are just the three that I chose to employ today. The most important part is that you don't just give up, sit down, and wallow in your mood, turning it into depression and self-pity. If you need to do that for a bit, feel free, but then get up and move on before those two downers settle in for good and ruin your day. Even if all that was accomplished was getting some dance exercise, getting laundry folded, or cookies made- hey, at least you did something, right? And tomorrow's a new day, ready for you with a new start. Carpe diem.
